When you study EPD's of different breeds of cows (kinda hard to do since all use a different base line) Black Angus will come out on top. They go from a lower birth weight to a higher weaning/yearling weight and have a better marbling score than other breeds on average under ideal conditions. Years ago when others were just sitting on their hands the AAA took these figures and promoted their brand hard. Not just to ranchers but to the public. So today we have a brand that the public knows and recognizes.
So the next question most will ask is.... Why doesn't every rancher just raise Black Angus? And the answer is "Under ideal conditions" The problem with Black Angus is they are black. Black cows do not do as well in the heat of the south. One main reason a lot of cows coming out the south; be they red or black; have big ears. Any breed of cow with big ears does better in the southern heat on marginal pasture.
