My 300U was doing the exact same thing as your 140 with it running bad after and hour and a very hot coil.A new set of spark plugs fixed mine. My plugs were worn and needed to be replaced but I was a bit surprised it fixed the problem. coil still run hot but tractor is running OK now. When does the tractor act like its starving for gas - after it quits running or all the time? If you check the gas flow as old suggested and if its OK try looking for leaks in the manifold. Look for holes and loose fit at the head and carb. If no leaks then maybe something wrong in the carb, maybe some junk got in it or something not put together correctly. Definitely check the float height.
