No experience with thrips but I usually have a lot of cutworm damage in my home garden in teh spring from cutworms. They usually feast on my beets and carrots in their early stages of growth Last couple of years I seeded the rows with very expensive diatomaceous earth from a greenhouse supply company. Supposed to deal with those little devils. Didn't help a bit, as a matter of fact it might have been worse than ever. Someone told me that planting later in the spring gets by the cutworm season, not sure if that would help or not. I got my garden in this year about mid-May as usual and so far, no cutworm damage which surprises me. Hopefully my luck will hold. They'll take out a whole row if you don't dig around and find them.
