Im going to put diatamacious earth and spray with veg oil soap mixture,,what else should I Prefer something that wont harm pets

No experience with thrips but I usually have a lot of cutworm damage in my home garden in teh spring from cutworms. They usually feast on my beets and carrots in their early stages of growth Last couple of years I seeded the rows with very expensive diatomaceous earth from a greenhouse supply company. Supposed to deal with those little devils. Didn't help a bit, as a matter of fact it might have been worse than ever. Someone told me that planting later in the spring gets by the cutworm season, not sure if that would help or not. I got my garden in this year about mid-May as usual and so far, no cutworm damage which surprises me. Hopefully my luck will hold. They'll take out a whole row if you don't dig around and find them.

larry, i have been told the blue dawn dish soap and water is supposed to be a good deterrent. i am going to try it on my fruit trees when the jap beetles show up.

Cutworms here are most active here during cool, wet weather, and in soil where there is lots of organic matter left from previous crops. Old farmers I knew would say the worms would disappear by June 1. I believe it was because warmer weather usually arrived by June.

Thrips are most often controlled with cultural practices such as mulch; buying new certified seed; fertilizer with nitrogen; not planting a garden next to alfalfa or clover fields and so on.

But if you have thrips bad enough you need to spray for them use one of a hundred different sprays with spinosad as the active ingredient. It is approved for organic gardens if I recall correctly.

Couple of guineas or Muscovy ducks will take care of the problem,my Guineas 'patrol' the rows in the garden daily.A Muscovy hen with a few ducklings will get every bug they see.

Larry....I'm 20 miles north of you and have struggled with thrips for a number of years now. They mostly destroy my gladiolus.
Last year I googled around and found a spray that is supposed to help. I had some success, but not completely. Had to spray frequently.
I don't remember what it is I used. I could look when I get home.
