Best bug deterrent I have found for sweet corn is plastic water bottles. I cut off the one end and slip it over the ear as it is forming. If you cut off the big end it stays on the cob much better but you have to have the lid intact. If you cut off the small end it is a loose fit and the wind may blow it off. I have had no trouble with bugs getting in the ears or birds trying a premature harvest. Coons are another story, I usually loose 40 ears or so before I stay up all night hunting the rascals.
