Sweet corn question

It is not too late to plant sweetcorn here in Iowa, and Louisiana has a much longer growing season than Iowa does, so I would say it is not too late.

My all time favorite variety is "Incredible"

we plant seminis obsession 2 . its a peaches and cream round up ready. insect resistant for the most part,

I agree. My neighbor raises Incredible every year and generously shares with all
the neighbors. Best I have ever eaten.

I cannot say for where you are but I plan to plant some today or tomorrow and I am here in Missouri. Most years it would be 1-2 foot tall by now but with all the rain we got in May there was no way to get in the garden and do anything

I live in N. Arkansas, and right or wrong I'm putting some in the ground this afternoon. The 15 inches of rain we got in May prevented me from getting all my crops in. Right now I'm only 1/3rd done with planting, but hope to be finished by Wednesday. The good news is, every thing that's in the ground right now is up and growing well. Got another field of dry beans to go in tomorrow once I get the ground fit; this will be the second time that field was planted due to rain.

For sweet corn, I use the old Golden Bantam type and have had good luck with it. It is a 78 day corn, so that puts harvest around mid-August if everything co-operates. I'll side-dress it in about 3 weeks with some N, also dust it the first time.

As far as keeping bugs off, just keep the plants dusted with Di-pel or similar dust and use B.T. when the ears silk. I've had good luck the last couple years with B.T. keeping the earworms out. They are the biggest pest that I've had to deal with. Most other bugs leave the corn alone.

Best bug deterrent I have found for sweet corn is plastic water bottles. I cut off the one end and slip it over the ear as it is forming. If you cut off the big end it stays on the cob much better but you have to have the lid intact. If you cut off the small end it is a loose fit and the wind may blow it off. I have had no trouble with bugs getting in the ears or birds trying a premature harvest. Coons are another story, I usually loose 40 ears or so before I stay up all night hunting the rascals.

(quoted from post at 11:53:19 06/01/20) I agree. My neighbor raises Incredible every year and generously shares with all

We planted some more of the Incredible today. It is an 85 day to maturation. Should be ready to harvest somewhere around the middle to the end of August.

rrman61...... Ok.... So you may be Late for the spring planting but I find seeds to be one of the cheapest things we have left. Does not hurt to try I guess. I think you can also wait and put in your seeds this early fall. I usually plant Sweet Merit or similar at my camp in SWLA. The thing is..... Go find an old fashioned feed store and you may find several types of sweet corn. The other thing I get at the feed store is a planting guide put out by the Lone Star Feed and Fertilizer Company. Lots of good gardening info here.

Obsession II is what I planted. You are partially correct You can't buy just that from Seminis. The seed is bagged in $750 bags. But dealers break it down for their dent corn customers. Customers who buy 500 and up bags of dent corn are at the head of the line. I got several of the "Courtesy bags," of 2500 seeds. OB II. I Planted one bag a week ago @ 18K Population 36 inch rows. and the second will go in the ground 4 June.
I rebuilt a used JD 7000 with just about every upgrade Shoup sells. AddedHD downsprings, and Yetter 13 wave coulters. Bullseye tubes, new closing wheels, all new seed belts and belt drive discs. Only have 1200 in it and it works flawlessly for SC and food plots.

One more thing..... Now this can be done in the case of a small to medium corn patch but harder to do on a large patch. When you see worms in the corn silk...... Fill a machinist type oil can with olive oil. You know the type of oil can that makes that clunking noise. Pump a little olive oil on each ear that has worms.... Where the worms are of course. Better than any safe deterant you can buy at the feed store.

I planted more yesterday.. I have some thats up 2-4 inches already. i space out my planting so it doesnt all come on at once...

the corn that goes in Deer plots usually goes in around mid june, while waiting for hay to cure...
