Chris, great question, "I thought it would have to be polarized before it would work" here's the deal:
A Generator should be correctly polarized BEFORE starting, because if its at opposite, VR or other harm is possible. A Generator still "works" at EITHER polarity but you obviously need it to match the battery well duh lol
HOWEVER if yours was already correct it can work fine and its not necessary to repeat it, but to be on the safe side if I'm not sure I would polarize before starting
If a genny had been at the shop Id definitely polarize before start up.
