Good pics! And, this reminded me of a local shop that used a surface grinder made specifically for heads. It was a horizontal table with a large grinding stone in the middle. The stone turned and vibrated somehow. The operator slid the head so that it was always supported by the table and part of it passed over stone. Same results as your pic except that there was no way to keep the cut even end to end. It could be flat, but tapered a little I think. Also difficult to remove a specific amount. This was in the 60-70s.
