Why in the world would you take it to the cops. They don't care about old hunting ammo. I say find a local gun club and ask if they have a youth group as part of their club. If they do donate to them. Anybody that is in a gun club will know if its any good. It's just basic hunting ammo. Not any hot loads or anything so it will be fine to shoot. I have some that is 30-40 years old that I still shoot from time to time. Only ever had 2 rounds not go off due to old age. If it happens all you do is keep gun pointed down range and unload no big deal. And it will not make a big huge explosion going off sitting on a shelf due to old age.
