This may not be best section but I will try here. Helping girlfriend clean out her late husbands things in garage, he died 14 years ago and was invaled for a few years before. Finaly found the key to get in a locked box in garage. Now the question is what to do with a lot of ammo that is at least 18+ years old. This is in Ohio. 2 boxes+ 12 guage shot gun shels; 2 20 guage shels; 2 boxes+ 22 rifel shels; 1 box of 30-30 shels, also 20 empty shels of the 30-30. What is best and legal way to get rid of them? I don't know much about guns. One box of the 12 guage has price tag on of $ 4.17 and other box $ 2.68. If allowed to even sell it what should asking price be? Have no idea what new ammo is priced at. What do we do?

Let the local police station take care of the old ammo.

According to Google if shells haven't been exposed to high heat or moisture they should be good to go.

I agree the police have better things to do. Than worry about a few boxes of ammo.As long as it was stored in a dry location. It should be just fine. When I was in the N G. We shot up old ammo every year.

Why in the world would you take it to the cops. They don't care about old hunting ammo. I say find a local gun club and ask if they have a youth group as part of their club. If they do donate to them. Anybody that is in a gun club will know if its any good. It's just basic hunting ammo. Not any hot loads or anything so it will be fine to shoot. I have some that is 30-40 years old that I still shoot from time to time. Only ever had 2 rounds not go off due to old age. If it happens all you do is keep gun pointed down range and unload no big deal. And it will not make a big huge explosion going off sitting on a shelf due to old age.

If you can use it, or know someone who can fantastic. It will work, or not. When my dad passed 3 yrs ago my brothers and I split up 30 year old ammo and have had zero failures. If she wants a few bucks fine. I would not use dented or water damaged shells due to failure to load, or eject. Any squib (seeming low power failed explosions) should be suspected of leaving material in the barrel. Checking the barrel for obstructions is then mandatory Normal shooter caution is always part of shooting. This last part is unlikely to happen. Jim

Looking at the Ohio ammo regulations, it looks to be very lax.

Unless something has changed, it should be OK to sell them at a yard sale or on Craigs list. Probably can't mail them though.

As far as the price, check what Walmart gets, probably mark it down 1/3, that will probably sell for 1/2 new price.

I've seen ammo at plenty of garage sales . It should not go bad at that age. Sell for slightly less than retail It will sell.

I?m guessing the cops would take it and sell it on their own garage sale. For liability sake, they wouldn?t use it on the force. About a dozen years ago, the local cops found a mint tommy machine gun in the vault. It was given to them about a hundred years ago from the federal government to ?fight illegal bootleggers ?, but was never used. They had a big article and photos of it in the newspaper and they were wondering if they should sell it. The next sheriff who got voted in knows nothing about it.

Check if Craig's List will accept ads for ammo or guns. The last time I checked they did not.

So long as it?s clean and been dry, sell it or give it to someone that can use it. I?m still using out of dad?s supply, and he passed in ?99.

Just give it to a friend who can use it. I've been on the recieveing end a few times under similar circumstances.BTW,It all functioned perfectly.

Being stored in an air tight container or climate controlled house is one thing.
Sitting in a cabinet in the garage (not climate controlled) going thru 30 years of 100 degree seasonal temp. And humidty changes is another.

Probably still good. Give it to a local gun guy. He will know what to do. Or you could sell it on www.gunbroker.com.

I have talked to my auctioner friend that can sell guns on his sales. He said to bring it to him when I can and he will put it on an upcomming auction with guns on it when things open up to where he is allowed to work. So that is what we are going to do. Those of you that said about selling on someplace I have no idea how would do something like that.
