The original conversions were made and sold by Funk Brothers in Kansas in early 50's. This was Ford's first attempt to enter the higher horsepower race. For $650 and a couple of days in the shop you now had a tractor that would pull a 3 bottom plow. Most of the conversions were a flat head 6 cylinder industrial engine, near end of the program a few V-8s were installed and at the end of the run they installed about 25 of the OHV 6 Cyl.
As you might guess, the rear ends could not stand up to the higher hp and would need to be rebuilt about every year. For this reason, Ford sued Funk and they were forced to quit building the conversions as Ford had to stand the rear end rebuilds. I have owned several of the conversions and am currently rebuilding an OHV model. With the Sherman Over/Under transmission, they would go 30 MPH or more.
If you want to have some fun, take one to a tractor pull. They will out pull everything in that weight class.
