Back in the 1960's unionized automobile endurance drivers were tasked to do nothing more than drive new pre production car models around southeast Michigan all day 24/7.
At one point the cars were holding up very well, too well.
It was discovered that a bunch of them were hanging out at their favorite strip joint all day.
All the while the test cars were racking up hundreds of miles per shift.
The drivers were jacking up one driven wheel and putting the car in gear while they were inside the strip joint all day.
So that belt driven thingy is a data logger that so far has not been hacked by the test drivers.
