As Jim says - check the rotor.
An easy way to check the rotor; remove the distributor cap. Then remove the coil wire from the distributor cap, leaving the other end attached to the coil. Hold the loose end of the coil wire close to the center tab on the rotor. As you crank the engine (or short the points) there should be NO spark to the rotor. If there is a spark to the rotor, it is a dud - throw the rotor away and get a new one.
