"Recently had my car and truck plate removed from mailbox."
15 or so years ago I was using my old license plates for a similar reason....the unimproved country road at the bottom of a hill intersects my property then makes an S turn around it. County hadn't installed any kind of speed or directional warning as to the curve's presence. Texas license plates are reflective so I used to put them on the fence as a stop gap measure to keep weekend, 2-3 AM drivers out of my fence.....hopefully.
One day, maybe 10 years ago, (time passes fast) I get this bill from a Toll Road down in Austin, TX, some 250 miles from me accusing me of having a trailer on their road and wanting compensation. In short, somebody took it off my fence and it wound up down there. After a few calls to the right state agency, proving that I wasn't responsible for an expired plate, they backed off and dropped the charge. By then the county had upgraded the road which included all weather topping, widening, and proper plackarding the fact that there was a curve ahead and an large sign with an arrow pointing the correct direction.
