You can hand crank them, I have done it many times. My father's boss bought me a Field Marshall to drive to cultivate and plough stubble after harvest, during the school holidays. They have a decompressor that is automatically release as you get up to speed with the handle.
Cartridge is a bit more powerful than a shot gun shell although it is the same size. It is full of tiny round sticks of grey colour. I was always told it was cordite but I do not know for sure. I only know it goes off with a massive bang and knocks you over if you inadvertently put one in a shotgun.
