International 3414 Hyraulic cyl. Repair

I am replacing seals on one of the loaders cyl.s'and am having trouble getting the cap on the end of the cyl. to thread out. There is a small slot in the cap end of the barrel with what appears to be a retaining ring or clip keeping the cap held in. I was told that you pry the clip or wire "up" toward the cap end of the cyl. while turning the cap to thread it out of the cylinder. I cannot seem to get the cap to start threading up out of the barrel. Any ideas on how this is supposed to come out?
