Our Avery 8-16 has the exact system you're talking about. Instead of shifting gears (moving different gears around to engage the engine) you move the engine back and forth along the frame to engage different gears. Avery used this design on many of their models. Works okay, I guess. More interesting than practical, obviously. I'd tell you the year of the tractor, but your guess is as good as mine. Anyone with an Avery serial number list, please contact me.
