The integrity of a pole barn with post spaced many feet apart comes from the post being several feet into the ground. The higher the walls are the more this is multiplied. While a building will stand up on a normal day it will fan fold over right where the post is bolted to the concrete in a strong wind unless proper bracing is applied to compensate for this. By proper bracing I am talking you need to build the pole barn like a house is constructed.
While moist dirt/rock/concrete will allow and promote wood to rot; properly treated wood will not rot. I have seen 50 year old wood post that are surrounded by salt water and while they may have barnacles growing on them they are as sound as the day they were put into the ground.
