What you state falls exactly in line with an article I read many years ago. I don't have it to quote but in summary it said that they had worked for years to Dieselize the D but the D voiced serious disdain over the matter by issuing a diesel knock that would unnerve nearly anybody! The idea was scrapped & the R came to be.
