This answer depends on where you live and your weather. The antifreeze jugs will say how much protection you have at certain mixtures and an antifreeze tester will also help you know that. I hear stories like you have about problems with antifreeze but I also listen to the auto restorers talking about the value of good antifreeze. I guess you should also know if your temp guage is working right, how hot your motor is running and if that is within the recommended limits or not. The only purpose of the water/coolant is to keep the engine from being too hot otherwise it would be an air cooled motor. If your motor is running at the right temp and you have enough antifreeze to keep it from freezing up, I wouldn't worry about it. The antifreeze has several things to help protect the radiator and cast metals; one of which is nitrites which keep the water from having little micro-explosions on the block cast that cause pitting and could thin the cylinder walls over time (or so the car guys say). Because the nitrites don't last forever, that is one more reason to change the antifreeze out as recommended.
