Oldtimer got it right, the 1940 Ford cars had column shift for the first time, was highly touted as being very modern. The pickups continued with floor shift through the 40s. On F-1 pickups anyhow. This isn't to say some hot rodder couldn't of converted a pickup to column shift, it was done. Seems kind of inverse of the floor shifters we put in cars in the 60s but it was a trend at that time. Mainly to get more leg room in those small drivers compartments. Ever stand next to an R Diesel running? The thump of the compression makes the stomach reverberate, very awesome. John in Nebr.
