After my dump trailer came off ball when it was dumping load got me to thinking, how long should my safety chains be? And when do you want brake away cable to apply 12v to electric brakes? I think the brake away cable should only work after safety chains fail, because applying 12v to my brakes could cause wheels to lock up especially on wet or snow covered roads. That could cause all sorts of problems. One time I had brake away cable too short. While making a sharp turn at low speed all 4 wheels locked up stopping me real fast. I can't imagine what it would be like going 70 mph on interstate with empty trailer. Then trailer comes off ball and brake away cable locking up all 4 wheels while chains are attached to truck.
So what's YTDOT's opinion on length for safety chains and when should brake away cable activate brakes? Before safety chains fail or after they fail?
