Drain plug and level plug for that pto is on left side behind the hitch hydraulic cylinder. You can fill them through the breather hole and measure like you did as you can see the level plug. But, too late for that now I am afraid. I would say you damaged the planetary gear if it won't shut off now and it did before you saw smoke.
I did that once upon a time when I forgot to put oil in a unit after doing a bunch of work on a customers tractor. Hope you didn't as it was costly way back then. Might have to find a used unit as any from a 300 up through a 560 with that planetary unit will work. Even just a band is crazy high priced.
