460 PTO won't disengage

Was out mowing weeds with the 460 today when it started to big down. I tried disengaging the PTO but it would not shut off. I also noticed some smoke coming from the breather tube on the left side of the PTO housing.

I stuck a dipstick down the breather tube and found less than an inch of oil in the PTO housing. I thought both the hydraulics and PTO use the same Hytrans and same reservoir. Is this true or are they separate?

I also tried adjusting the PTO with the two adjustment screws on the right side of my housing however it's still will not disengage.

Thoughts?

May be toasted. as Dieseltech noted, they need Hytran, and are not part of the other systems. If it was slipping, it got hot and may have warped disks, or stuck a band with burnt Hytran. Good luck. They are heavy, Drain down the Hytran in the trans/diff/finals below the hole. Jim

Thanks for the quick replies! Where is the fill hole for the PTO HyTran? The plug in the belly under the axle drains this? Any tips on taking the PTO out? Which bolts?

Drain plug and level plug for that pto is on left side behind the hitch hydraulic cylinder. You can fill them through the breather hole and measure like you did as you can see the level plug.
But, too late for that now I am afraid. I would say you damaged the planetary gear if it won't shut off now and it did before you saw smoke.

I did that once upon a time when I forgot to put oil in a unit after doing a bunch of work on a customers tractor. Hope you didn't as it was costly way back then. Might have to find a used unit as any from a 300 up through a 560 with that planetary unit will work. Even just a band is crazy high priced.

The four large bolts hold it on. You'll need a pry bar to ease it out as there is a giant O-ring around the boss that fits into the main case. Be ready though as once the o ring clears it will be ready to jump out and it is a good 100 pounds or so. Have a floor jack or little platform ready for it to land on.

The plug on the bottom drains the rear end and transmission, which you'll have to do anyway before you remove the pto.

When i worked for ihc shop i cut 2 long bolts heads off same size as the bolts that hold it to gear case.round end off .remove 2 bolts 1 across from each other screw the long headless bolts in those holes.remove all other bolts then work unit off the big oring prolly be mean too as you got it smoking .those long bolts make it moch easier to remove and install.
When reassembling a pipe 2 ft long over pto shaft can help too
