NOx is actually a worse problem with diesels than the visible smoke. The attributes that makes diesel engines so efficient (high compression ratio, high ignition temperature, and un- throttled intake air) unfortunately make them very good at producing NOx pollutants which in turn results in smog. Gasoline engines by their very nature (the opposite of the above attributes) are much less prone to producing NOx and therefore don't need all the complicated emissions controls that diesels do to achieve the same level of exhaust pollutants.
