Yes Scott, oven cleaner is hard on the paint. Most tanks that I see are bare aluminum. I agree with the E85 on a big rag, or if you are not comfortable with the risk in that, get a citrus (dlimonene) cleaner. It is a solvent that in itself is not going to attack most paints, but some products with dlimonene also contain high levels of caustic, which is hard on paint.
