8V Battery

Having my first exposure to an 8V battery; A friend says it is OK for a 6V system on a crawler. Which mode on a charger is used, 6V or 12V? Also, how best to deal with rusted tin: remove rust entirely or use a sealer and then quality paint? Beginning work on an OC3-42, 1953; lots of after market modifications by previous owners; a real challenge for a beginner.
