Hey Geo, I had a very similar problem on an old White backhoe once, well it didnt have a pony motor but did have lots of black smoke when trying to start, it had been sitting a long time as well anyway I wound up squirting some engine oil on top of the pistons, a man told me that over time the oil would run off the cylinder walls and it wouldnt have enough compression to start, but it did the trick it started right up, I'm not familiar with the injectors on that older model but the later models have a 1" nut that holds the injectors down in the pre-cups just remove this nut and the injector comes out of the pre-cup and it does have a o-ring around it.
