Before hitting the road for the Berryville tractor show, I stopped in at the Food Lion to pick up some provisions. I had a cooler in the truck, so I'd need some ice. I like the Food Lion--sometimes they have cherries in season for $1.99 a pound.
"Do you have a medium size bag?" I asked the lady at the cash register.
"We have ten or twenty pounds," she said.
"Ten or twenty?"
"Yes, ten or twenty."
A moment of indecision. Small bag? Big bag?
"Ten? Twenty?" This was the store lady.
McCormick Deering 10-20. That settled it. This was surely a sign. If it wasn't then I don't know what is. I'd already let one slip through my fingers. Wasn't going to happen again.
"I'll take the ten pound bag," I said.
I looked at her with an earnestness that far exceeded anything the situation called for.
"Thank you, ma'am, you've been more help than you'll ever know."
