Store Lady, Bag of Ice and McCormick 10-20

Before hitting the road for the Berryville tractor show, I stopped in at the Food Lion to pick up some provisions. I had a cooler in the truck, so I'd need some ice. I like the Food Lion--sometimes they have cherries in season for $1.99 a pound.

"Do you have a medium size bag?" I asked the lady at the cash register.
"We have ten or twenty pounds," she said.
"Ten or twenty?"
"Yes, ten or twenty."
A moment of indecision. Small bag? Big bag?
"Ten? Twenty?" This was the store lady.
McCormick Deering 10-20. That settled it. This was surely a sign. If it wasn't then I don't know what is. I'd already let one slip through my fingers. Wasn't going to happen again.
"I'll take the ten pound bag," I said.
I looked at her with an earnestness that far exceeded anything the situation called for.
"Thank you, ma'am, you've been more help than you'll ever know."
"You're welcome, sir. Enjoy your ice!"

I love it when random numbers we come across happen to also be
model numbers of tractors. Like my neighbors address is 1086.

Nice piece.
It captures more than the simple
transaction between the two of you.
Like, how a word can trigger our
thoughts to an idea far removed from the
issue at hand.
Thanks.

Ernie the 2n has 1091 stamped on
rear end and on the plate by the
steering wheel. My address is
1091.

Thanks, that's what I was going for.. Glad you picked up on that. It's the small events and interactions that interest me; the big things like weddings, graduations, new jobs and so on are usually planned for and not surprising. I guess I'm drawn to the minutiae of life, maybe sometimes too much.

Now just remains to actually GET a 10-20! I'll check in with any progress here, won't keep it a secret.

I've never hear of the store called Food Lion. Good name.
At first, I thought you were talking about cherries. You were calling a ten pound bag of cherries 'small'? Guess you really like cherries. I finally realized it was bags of ice. Okay, so 10 pounds of ice was a good choice for your needs. But you only got the 10. You only got half of the whole. I think you need to go back and get the 20, and then maybe your 10-20 tractor will appear.

Hahaha Ja coulda spent a little more time on the intro, cleared things up. Came away with three pounds of cherries, though. Food Lion is ok, but their ice is high. For the 10-20, was supposed to meet up with a guy at the Berryville show, get a line on one. Never met him before, didn't know how to find him. He told me he's around 6-4" and weighs about 400 lbs. Ok, I'll probably recognize you, I said. I'll follow up after the show--he was at home trying to get tractors in shape for the whole thing. Couldn't stick around. Proud I didn't buy anything--wait, one cheeseburger: $3. Probably the least amount I've ever spent at one of these shows.
