I have a late model JD=A that I just had the starter completely rebuilt. After installing it, now I can't get it to engage the fly wheel when I step on the starter lever. It grinds like the pinion teeth are grinding with the fly wheel teeth , but it will not engage. If my battery doesn't die , and after a number of attempts , if I am luckey, sometimes it will engage.
I took the starter out and hooked it up directly to the battery and it runs fine.. I did notice that the pinion gear has a about a 3/8 to 1/2" end play when it is at its maximum throw out point. Is this normal? Could end play cause the pinion not to engage the fly wheel and cause the grinding I hear?
Could the bendix be bad? What are the signs of a bad bendix?
