Starter bendix question

I have a late model JD=A that I just had the starter completely rebuilt. After installing it, now I can't get it to engage the fly wheel when I step on the starter lever. It grinds like the pinion teeth are grinding with the fly wheel teeth , but it will not engage. If my battery doesn't die , and after a number of attempts , if I am luckey, sometimes it will engage.

I took the starter out and hooked it up directly to the battery and it runs fine.. I did notice that the pinion gear has a about a 3/8 to 1/2" end play when it is at its maximum throw out point. Is this normal? Could end play cause the pinion not to engage the fly wheel and cause the grinding I hear?

Could the bendix be bad? What are the signs of a bad bendix?

What kind of condition is your ring gear on the flywheel in? Had this same condition on my 1950 A and a new ring gear cured it.

It looks good, there is a little wear on the edges where the pinion was grinding , but nothing bad. Up untill I had the starter rebuilt, it was working fine. When the starter completely stopped, I took it to a electrical shop and they went through it and put in new brushes, bushings, new post, etc. When I installed it again is when it started seeing this grinding and not engaging.

Yes so sounds like was not put together correctly when they worked on the starter. 2 A's and 2 B's never had that problem starter gear always was enquaged before power hit starter.
