There used to be two companies (that I know of) offering free internet service. They are referred to as ISP (Internet Service Provider). One went out of business or was bought out and the only one that I know of now is netzero. There web page is www.netzero.com. The catch is you have to download their software and what it does is it puts a banner ad on the top of your computer screen. With a 15" monitor this could be annoying but with a 19" you can kinda mentally block it out. They have alot of local phone numbers (check their web page), it all depends on where you live. When I was using them their dialup number was the same as the number for my pay service which was 18.95/mth. Unfortunately for some reason they no longer provide access in my area so I'm back to paying 18.95. That is actually high for an ISP but since it is the only game it town it is either pay or sit on the sidelines. As for free email there are all kinds of places offering free "internet email" but as others have said, to read it you need an internet connection. Yahoo and hotmail are a couple just to mention a few.
