Free email and internet service - what's the catch ???

I have a regular phone-line hookup for my email and internet service, and I pay a nominal fee ($10 Cdn per month for 20 hours plus $1 per hour over that extra). Some guys tell me there is "free" service (like Yahoo, etc.), but there's gotta be some tradeoff or catch, otherwise the company's charging for their services wouldn't have any customers. What is the deal on the free service?
