-On the 440 I would say it is a weak CDI box or possibly sucking air in the carb somewhere, or it could be low on compression. One thing you can do is remove the flywheel and sand the magnets on it to make sure there is no rust on them, If it has rust on them it shortens the air gap between. -On the 340, does it have points and condensor. If so, the condensor is bad or getting bad. I have soldered in many off the shelf condensors in place of a factory one. You can get a condensor at a auto parts store real cheap. Just solder it in or twist the wires together and attach it anywhere out side the engine. I have used electrical tape to tape it to somewhere on the engine.
