Sounds like you've got a 'put it together puzzle' tractor. Its my understanding that the 4 speed trans did not come out until the 8N. Another good way to spot the difference, the 8N has the smaller bolt pattern, both on front and rear. If you have the close bolt pattern on rear, but wide bolt pattern on fron, you indeed have a 'put together' tractor! If you'll do a bit of research to document what parts of the tractor are what model, it sure will help make your job easier when you go to get repair parts. Other than that, shouldn't be much of a problem. Hope you didn't pay a premium price for it!
