If you have an original solenoid (relay) the coil that makes it turn on is powered inside the relay, and needs a ground to make it go. Most relays require less than 5 amps, so a common hardware pushbutton should be OK. Pull the wire off of the relay small terminal. Be careful to have it in neutral. jump the terminal to ground and see if the starter turns the engine. If yes, it is a ground to start design. If nothing, it is a power to start relay. If ground to start, ground one side of your good quality push button, and connect the other to the relay Start (small) terminal. If power to start go from the key switch as you have been. to give it power only when the button is pushed. Jim
