None of my air/oil cooled tractors have a thermostat on the fan, but i do now remember seeing some big Deutz engines with them. The only filtering the air gets, is from a screen in front of the fan, and it has fairly large holes in it. The cyclinder fins are quite far apart, and all the smaller trash is blown right on through. At least on all i've seen.
I've NEVER had an air/oil cooled engine plug from trash, and over heat. BUT, i do from time to time check for trash.
