I just remember when the air cooled Deutz engine hit the market here in the 70s, there was even an article in a farm magazine about retrofitting them into farm pickups. I met one guy that did it, he liked it, power was down, but mileage was way up. On air cooled engines, they do have a thermostat, on the cooling fan, and they have to have a very large cooling fan to push air past the clinders, and in an ag environment it has to be filtered, so the cylinder cooling area doesn't fill with trash and dust.
