Good idea on the Duramax not being an option, I've read about high head failure rates on them. I would go with the Cummins in a Ram. It is a more basic engine design, inline 6 versus the Powerstroke's V8. The inline configuration gives greater strength, easier maintenance (just look in the engine compartments of both trucks) and the inline also gives better low end grunt for pulling. Plus, depending on your budget, there are plenty of mods that can be done to make the engine even mightier. Just for aesthetic value, the Cummins sounds much more "diesel" that the V8 diesels. My 2001 Ram 2500 sounds beautiful when you hear the engine echo off of other vehicles or building in town. On the highway, it is a powerful, steady hum. Although they are biased, you can get a lot of Cummins information from the Turbo Diesel Register website (www.turbodieselregister.com). The TDR is a national group of Cummins Ram enthusiests.
