Yes, it’s just a Dodge thing, and it’s limited to the 2nd Gen from when they changed the dash in ‘98 until they changed to the 3rd Gen in ‘02 1500’s and ‘03 for the 2500/3500’s. The only ones I’ve ever seen NOT cracked are trucks that have lived most of their lives in a garage.
I had to replace the one in my ‘98. I’ve never heard ANYBODY say it’s easy but Hobo. My son and I did mine. It wasn’t really difficult but it definitely was not easy. It was the first time I’d done one and it took us about 6 hours. I bought the real dash top from LMC Truck. Seems it was a bit over $200 with shipping. Color match was good and it fit like factory. Pretty sure it’s warranties against cracking, too.
It’s the material Dodge went to that’s the problem. Like SV, the dash in my ‘95 never cracked and a buddy's ‘97 with 500K and not much paint left on it has never cracked.
