Truck dash Opinions

99 ram the dash is plastic they?re notorious for cracking and falling apart from the windshield back towards the driver about 9 inches. This thing has been epoxied back to gather so many times it?s ridiculous. I?m thinking what?s the point, next time it starts cracking all up I?m just gonna throw it out and drive around without it. It?s only the top piece. Can anybody think of a downside to this. I?ll be able to look right down on all the electronics and stuff. Wouldn?t be able to throw anything up there .

I bought a 2000 Dodge for a backup plow truck. Previous owners must've had same problems. They "solved" the issue by using camouflage duct tape to re-do the plastic. Wife actually likes it. *lol*

The duct tape seems to be holding together quite well, and for a while we initially just thought they had bought an aftermarket dash cause it looked so well done.

I?ve had 5 different dodge trucks of new body style and never ever had one dash that was cracked current truck is 21 years old also have a 93.5 build date with 380,000 miles and not a crack in the dash . You can get just the top piece of plastic to replace it or you could put a dash mat on it

Every thing plastic that has to do with the dash on'em will crack...
The good they are EZ to replace the bad $$$ for the parts...

I had one to replace the heater core in there are tricks to swing the passagers side back its suppose to save a bunch of time BTDT... He had just had the plastic dash replace I had orders not to crack the dash. Instead of swinging it back I took it apart piece by piece it surprised me how EZ it was I then found out I could do it that way save the plastic from cracking... It only added 30 min. to the job to disassemble it piece by piece and sure nuff a lot easier to get at the HVAC box...

Is this just a Dodge thing? My Chevy is a 99 and no cracks on it. The only thing wrong with it is the big dent in the back of the bed when sister borrowed it.

Manufacturers went to "padded" plastic instrument panels in the sixties as a safety measure. And we still have them today, even though cars have airbags and seat belt use is close to 100 percent. Do you insist that your front seat passengers buckle up before you put the truck in gear, even if you're only going a few hundred feet? Then you should be fine without the padded dash. Otherwise, you should probably replace it.

Yes, it’s just a Dodge thing, and it’s limited to the 2nd Gen from when they changed the dash in ‘98 until they changed to the 3rd Gen in ‘02 1500’s and ‘03 for the 2500/3500’s. The only ones I’ve ever seen NOT cracked are trucks that have lived most of their lives in a garage.

I had to replace the one in my ‘98. I’ve never heard ANYBODY say it’s easy but Hobo. My son and I did mine. It wasn’t really difficult but it definitely was not easy. It was the first time I’d done one and it took us about 6 hours. I bought the real dash top from LMC Truck. Seems it was a bit over $200 with shipping. Color match was good and it fit like factory. Pretty sure it’s warranties against cracking, too.

It’s the material Dodge went to that’s the problem. Like SV, the dash in my ‘95 never cracked and a buddy's ‘97 with 500K and not much paint left on it has never cracked.

I?ll try to post a picture of it tomorrow night so y?all can understand. Lady at work has the same model truck her?s is doing the same thing. Company I work for has a 2001 it?s did the same thing but it?s a company truck so It gets replaced. It?s just the very top not the face.

Dodge 3rd gens crack too, and the ones I have seen are usually worse than the 2nd gens but 98-05 seems to be the popular years . Another option is a plastic overlay, they fit surprisingly well, glue down or simply let it lay up there. Just do a search for "dodge dash overlay" Chevy/GMC do it too, same years, not sure about others.

The dash on my old '77 Chevy Ol' Blue is cracked in 4 places and I'm just shocked, shocked I tell you!

The carpet covers are to help reduce the glare you get off those large dashes. Guy I know put in own carpet on his Roadmaster Wagons years ago.
And it is not a Dodge thing. I can tell you GM , and Fords also do this. That's why the aftermarket has sold them for years.
