Manufacturers went to "padded" plastic instrument panels in the sixties as a safety measure. And we still have them today, even though cars have airbags and seat belt use is close to 100 percent. Do you insist that your front seat passengers buckle up before you put the truck in gear, even if you're only going a few hundred feet? Then you should be fine without the padded dash. Otherwise, you should probably replace it.
