Tom before you turn into a parts changing mode of repair, stop and do a few things first. If your battery needs a charge, do so and check it when done to be sure it is capable of holding a load. Should you find it is bad, then change it. Once you are capable of starting with the machine battery, ground the field post at the generator. Does it charge? If it does, more than likely then you have a regulator problem. If it doesn`t, then you probably have a generator problem. I would use a multi meter to the battery instead of either the ammeter or the dash volt meter just in case they may have a problem also. Just my $.02 worth.
