I used to work for a big company where we built complex medical analyzers. One time the management got this great idea that we in the engineering dept should conduct 'troubleshooting ability' (to certify them) tests on the final test technicians (who would pronounce the device working properly for sale). Our job was to rig a "test" device with a set of problems and observe how the tech resolved/repaired them in a logical efficient way. Strangely enough, we found that the techs who talked to themselves usually led themselves to abandon an improbable or improper repair and to talk themselves into the correct path to a good solution.
