Pat, this question comes up once or twice a month, and the replies you got are kind of where we are at by now. The link (if it doesn't work, it's http://www.ytmag.com/ttalk/messages/201973.html ) is to page 3 of this discussion area, where someone asked the same question a week or two ago. That voices my opinion on the subject.... ;) You can search the archives here for 'first tractor' or 'what tractor' or 'which tractor for me' and you will find this topic well covered.

There are a couple different Sherman's, but basically the pto is linked to the rear end of an 8N with or without a Sherman, and it is difficult to choose proper ground speed vs pto speed for many chores, as well as being dangerous _wthout_ an OCR. If you already _had_ the 8N, go ahead & use it. But why do so, when for another $1000 you can have live pto, hydraulics, power steering, and so forth?

Oliver has several good tractors as cheap as 8N's, and IHC has many tractors up to 70 hp that I see sell at auctions for under $2500. These are far more tractor than an 8N. Those of you moving to the country are fixated on a little 8N tractor, and have bid their prices up to more than they are worth, while bigger, more capible tractors are selling for peanuts. Atho as tractor collecting matures, and people see they want a bit more tractor, I do see the prices of 1950's & 60's tractors rising now.

Anyhow, what you are looking at can work for you, but it seems you are limiting yourself. Consider learning more about tractors & what you need, what you like, what you can afford and buy accordingly. Search these archives for 'live pto' and 'power steering' and 'over running clutch' and see what you think after a couple nights of reading. :)

Then, look out for Ford's SoS tranny, IHC's TA tranny, the later Oliver xxx5 series tractors, and other such issues. The above are not _bad_ tractors, but they have _issues_ which you should be aware of, and pay for them accordingly. For example, the TA tranny takes $500 to fix, and most people sell the tractor about the time it's wore out. The SoS tractor takes about $3,000 to overhaul, and most people sell when they are about shot. It is said the older xxx0 model Olivers are more stout than the newer xxx5 models....

It's hard to make a big mistake tho. Go ahead & buy the 8N, you'll like it ok, and when you understand better what you need & want in a year or 2, you can sell the 8N for what you paid for it, so no harm done.

Lots of info???? Yup. You asked. :) Happy learning. :)

--->Paul

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
