They were way ahead of their time. I have an SD-4 built in 1954, has 51 hp, live power, live hydraulics, and 10 speed transmission. Built tractors from 1948 to 1956 but had to be paid for when you ordered one. First attempt at tractors was adapting the SD-3 engine to a Farmall M. Did not work out well, used half as much fuel but not as much power as the gas M. In 1955 they developed a power steering unit for SD-4 which worked very well. Mack Trucks (were built in same city in Pennsylvania) as tractors, Mack liked the unit and it was then produced for them and the rest is history. The Sheppard Steering Sector is used today by many Semi truck manufacturers. Same company is still going, quit tractors because of truck business.
