Just to give you an idea of what a portable looks like in the shop.
The wire feeder that goes with it. I have about 50 feet of leads so I can reach most of the shop without moving the welder.
Takes up a lot of space, but I have a cord hanging on the wall that I can plug in, flip the transfer switch on the meter pole, and I can power the whole place. Another plus of portables is they are usually 100% duty cycle. I can go to town on heavy work and never need to worry about overheating.
For doing shop work a plug in unit would be a lot handier, and more economical.
