there are three welders in my area for sale. Which would you consider and why? What are there features and may they be upgraded by adding different attachments?

Miller Big Blue 250D on a trailer, Kept outside. Looks rough but works. $1000

Miller Regency 250 CV/DC Nice shape, $800

Miller Dialarc HF Serial JH29516 and is either a D or a zero $700

Appreciate any constructive thoughts.

Are the Regency and Dial arc single phase input power? If not, and you don?t have 3ph to power them they are pretty much useless.

The dial arc can stick weld and run TIG.

Does the regency have a wire feeder of some sort with it? Without one it is just a paper weight. It is not capable of stick or tig, only wire feed.

The 250D is a good deal, if it is working. But, do you want a portable or a wall powered unit. The portable is also a generator which can be handy if you do more outside work and less shop time.

Not sure about any of those being used what you may get, so all I can say is what I did . I looked at a lot of used welders when my small Lincoln 125 finally could not keep going I broke down and bought a new Miller Bobcat 225 so to have a warranty and not worry when I need it that it will work.i keep fuel stabilizer in the gas and run it every week , the only thing I did to it after I bought it and made sure it did not void warranty was to install a fuel line cutoff and run it out of gas after using it each time.

Just to give you an idea of what a portable looks like in the shop.

The wire feeder that goes with it. I have about 50 feet of leads so I can reach most of the shop without moving the welder.

Takes up a lot of space, but I have a cord hanging on the wall that I can plug in, flip the transfer switch on the meter pole, and I can power the whole place. Another plus of portables is they are usually 100% duty cycle. I can go to town on heavy work and never need to worry about overheating.

For doing shop work a plug in unit would be a lot handier, and more economical.
