I like antique and classic tractors and own a number of them. I haven't extended my collection past IHC Farmall yet, but in time I might. I work for an older farmer and he is pretty much all new green and I get to operate all of his equipment. From his lawnmower to his combines. John Deere has a good line of new equipment but my opinion is that it is overnamed and overpriced. I am just saying I think John Deere has a big ego and they charge to much. I am not bashing there equipment. But what isn't high to buy anymore. I think all manufacturers are competetive in either price or quaility or they wouldn't be in the buiseness. It is just to bad that in some cases it isn't both. I think IHC Farmall was the best tractors on the line in the 30's and 40's hands down. Yes, but I am not color blind becuase I realize that it changed around later on and they eventually took a fall. But for that moment in time they was the king of the mountain. Everyone takes their turn at the top but the hard part is staying there. John Deere has survived alone all these years and perhaps are at the top now but they haven't been at the top the whole time. But, none the less, they have stuck right in there and have remained in buisness even through some dry times. I think John Deere and Case IH have went head to head all these years just simply becuase they are the most popular two. If one or the other went out of buisness there would soon be another come up and the fight would still continue. If I was going to buy a new machine I don't know what color it would be, but I would look for the best quality for my dollar. If I was in the market for a newer used tractor I would probably look into getting a green one. But for the time being I will stick to the red classics and antiques. It really boils down to what you like operating and how it works for you.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
